Synerscan™ Advanced Technology
for Affordable,
Non-Contact SMT Device Inspection
Efficient, Precise and Repeatable
The Synerscan™ is a, non-contact laser
based inspection system that gives you extraordinary abilities to
control and characterize the lead conditions of SMT mounted electronic
devices. The system employs our patent pending scanning laser
measurement technology to accomplish efficient, precise and repeatable
tests and inspections. The system will rapidly test and inspect for
solder tail characteristics including lead coplanarity, linearity, true
position, skew and lead presence.
Eliminates Failures
The Synerscan™ is an affordable inspection tool designed to offer
flawless and trouble-free operation across a wide range of SMT
devices. It is specifically designed for accurate and reliable
inspection and test on SMT mounted electronic components. The
importance of inspecting SMT connectors, IC's, switches, etc. is
universally acknowledged and serves a number of purposes for both the
manufacturer and the end user. For the component manufacturer,
complete certainty that the product it delivers will meet the end
user's SMT mounting requirement is absolutely essential for today's
hyper-competitive, quality assured industry. The end user, on the
other hand, is able to achieve improved quality; and certainty that
the components used in its assemblies will not fail due to solder lead
mounting deficiencies. Synerscan™ component inspection and tests
virtually eliminate PCB, component and even product failures due to
deficiencies caused by out of tolerance coplanarity, linearity, true
position, skew, profile, and absence conditions.
Advanced Process Analysis Tool
As a reliable method to achieve industry demands for 6 Sigma, ISO and
QS level quality assurance, the Synerscan™ allows today's
manufacturer an unprecedented way to achieve quality levels that until
a few years ago, were technically unattainable and cost prohibitive.
Rivaling the performance of inspection systems that may cost five time
as much, the Synerscan™ allows you to efficiently and repeatedly
perform 100% solder lead and tail inspection.
More specifically, the tool inspects the SMT device so that the
repeatability of the inspection process is improved. With inspection
reporting, it helps you to analyze the manufacturing process in order
to gain improvements, reduce costs and avoid a defective product.
Design and Performance
Designed by Synergistech, Inc., a world class supplier of advanced
inspection technology, the Synerscan™ utilizes a solid state
scanning laser that sweeps across the SMT device at lightning fast
speeds up to six (6) inches per second (15.2cm) . Offering a 2" x
4" maximum scanning area (5.1cm x 10.0cm) , the system will
inspect, characterize and report the lead conditions of the SMT device
in under one (1) second. In its bench-top configuration, the Synerscan™
will produce approximately 1200 operator controlled inspected units
per hour (semi-automatic and fully automated versions available).
Efficient Flexible Operation
All the equipment operator needs to do is place the SMT device for
testing into a locating nest and initiate the inspection sequence.
After the inspection, the device's condition, pass or fail, is
simultaneously indicated on the system's computer monitor and via easy
to read illuminated indicators.
The unit is completely field configurable and may be purchased with
dedicated, universal or interchangeable locating fixtures and work
aids such as tray loaders, tube loaders, rotating fixtures, etc.
Custom designed fixtures are available and additional fixtures may be
installed in the field by customer personnel.
The unit is easily programmed using the system's unique Windows
95® based control interface. Initial programming is provided by
Synergistech, Inc. The unit may be updated, changed and revised in the
field.
Coplanarity Inspection
In a typical coplanarity inspection, each of the SMT device's solder
tails is scanned every 0.0005" (0.0127mm) to determine the solder
tail's position, so as to establish a repeatable average measurement.
Subsequent to the scanning, the Synerscan's™ software mathematically
inverts and lowers the SMT device onto a mounting plane, until the
part comes to rest. The distances from the mathematical mounting plane
to the bottom of each tail are then computed. The largest measurement
is then used as the coplanarity for the device. The end result of the
methodology is the maximum utilization of the allowable coplanarity
tolerance specification.
Linearity, true position, skew, profile, and presence (or absence)
are all accomplished in a similar manner where the control software
compares the measured lead conditions from a datum and/or from one to
another.
Data Collection and Calculations
The Synerscan™ employs Synergistech's patent pending scanning laser
measurement technology. Coplanarity, linearity and other laser based
measurements (optimized systems are capable of measuring solder tail
width, spread, gap, span and package height) are determined by
sweeping and scanning the electronic device's solder tails, at the
theoretical point of PCB mounting contact. Solder tail elevation,
position and condition measurement is then calculated based upon the
laser light reflected from the scanned solder tail. The resulting
reflected laser light is converted into signal voltages by a laser's
triangulated receptors. Final measurement calculations are computed
and reported to the operator via the software.
User-Defined Screens
Menu driven screens allow user selected information to be displayed on
the monitor.
• Main Screen: Displays
the status of the currently inspected part.
• Statistics: displays
the results for the current batch or lot being tested.
• Lead Data: For both
lead elevation and true position, displays by lead number, the last
Scan Data, Average (Xbar), Range (R), Standard Deviation and Cpk
• Additional Screens:
Available for selecting English or Metric dimensioning, system setup
and calibration, lead elevation and true position graphs and real
time laser readings.
